People try to define God, limiting Him to their dictionary definitions. Some claim the English word for God is derived from the English word good, claiming that God is the source of all goodness. Others say it comes from the German, meaning “to call,” a being humans call upon to worship and adore. Those ideas sound good. God is good. God is worthy of our adoration. Still, we have to be careful that we let God define Himself in the context and flow of His word. The immediate context connects God with His works: He’s the creator.

The Hebrew word for God, Elohim, is plural. Still, the verb created is singular. Every English teacher knows the concept of agreement. That means that plural nouns must have plural verbs and singular nouns must have singular verbs. However, the Hebrew word for “God” is plural, and the verb “created” is singular. As a result, the plural noun speaks of greatness rather than quantity, signifying that God is great. Some scholars say that this is a figure of speech called the plural of Majesty or Quality. As a result, the plural Elohim tells us that the Bible begins with an incredible God, referring to his majestic qualities! He’s awesome! He’s great! He’s good.

Our awesome God created the heaven and the earth. That refers to everything above and below us. God keeps it simple, putting everything from the perspective of the humans who will occupy this earth. Whoever you are, remember this: everything you see above and below you is God’s handiwork.

Genesis 1:1 denies: Evolution, Pantheism, Polytheism, Atheism, Materialism, Theistic Evolution, and the Eternal State Theory.

Where do you stand?
