I pray that we may REJOICE in 2018! Paul wanted his friends to progress in life while experiencing the “JOY of faith.” Philippians 1:25.
God intends that we find JOY in every aspect of life, the big and the small things, the exciting and the mundane. Moses emphasized this twice in one chapter,
“Ye shall REJOICE in ALL that ye put your hand unto, ye and your households…thou shalt REJOICE before the LORD thy God in ALL that thou puttest thine hands unto.” Deuteronomy 12:7,18
Paul, following Moses’s example of repetition, says,
“Finally, my brethren, REJOICE in the Lord. To write the same things to you, to me indeed is not grievous, but for you it is safe…REJOICE in the Lord ALWAY: and again I say, REJOICE.” Philippians 3:1, 4:4
The King James says, “ALWAY.” The adverb comes from “all” and “way,” which signifies “a going,” “at all goings,” hence, as Webster tells us, “at all times.” We can think of it this way,
REJOICE “ALL THE WAY.”
There’s not a spot on the road of life where we can’t find our joy in God. Like the marriage vows, our relationship with God is good in sickness and in health, for richer or for poorer, till death ends our journey. No loving spouse abandons his or her beloved when times get tough. Tough times only bring them closer together thus making the good times that much more sweeter.
The JOY we experience now will only continue in greater degree when, through the miracle of resurrection, life replaces death once and for all to our eternal JOY.
John Adams said,
“But notwithstanding all, Saint Paul and Dr Barrow have taught me to rejoice evermore, and be content. This Phrase ‘rejoice evermore’ shall never be out of my heart, memory or mouth again as long as I live, if I can help it. This is my Perfectibility of Man.”
“Still, still I am not weary of life . Strangely. I have hope. You take away hope and what remains? What pleasures? I have seen a queen of France with 18 million livres of diamonds on her person, but I declare that all the charms of her face and figure added to all the glitter of her jewels did not impress me as much as that little shrub right there. Now your mother always said that I never delighted enough in the mundane, but now I find that if I look at even the smallest thing my imagination begins to roam the milk way. Rejoice evermore. Rejoice evermore. Rejoice evermore! Oh how I wish that had always been in my heart and on my tongue.” — From HBO Miniseries – John Adams
